The series starts with the resurrection of Barnabas Collins, who comes out of his coffin from 1790. Dr. Julia Hoffman helps cure his vampirism, and he is released from the curse that Angelique Collins put on him. Later on, Victoria is transported to 1790, after a seance, in which Barnabas was trying to contact his sister, Sarah Collins, who died in 1790.
