In the mid 20th century, Jehovah's Witnesses in Quebec were routinely harassed by the police because they were highly critical of the Catholic Church. The Witnesses fought a seven-year battle for the right to practise their religion and publish their materials. The result was the Bill of Rights, precursor to the Charter of Rights.
