he Italian campaign of 1944 was considered by some at the time as merely a sideshow to the Allied thrust through continental Europe, with Allied soldiers in Italy referred to as 'D-Day Dodgers'. This programme, however, with its use of archive footage and reconstruction, recounts the four major Allied assaults on Monte Cassino, the Benedictine monastery on the German Gustav defensive line, to illustrate how gruelling the Italian offensive was, with massive losses suffered on both sides.
