The construction of the £500 million Queen Mary 2 superliner, built to replace the QE2 on the 3,000 mile Southampton to New York route, it is the longest, tallest and broadest passenger ship in the world. Put together at the St Nazarie shipyards in France, the vessel was designed to accommodate 2,000 people, withstand rogue waves on the Atlantic Ocean and reach speeds of up to 30 knots.
