Deep inside Quecreek mine in Pennsylvania, 18 miners begin their evening shift on 24 July 2002. Suddenly, one of the miners breaks through an abandoned mine, inadvertently unleashing a quarter of a billion litres of stagnant water into Quecreek. Seeing their escape route completely blocked by water, nine of the miners quickly dash into a ventilation shaft, slowly crawling their way out to safety. However, the other nine are not quite so lucky. Retreating to the highest section of the mine, the miners have no choice but to wait for rescue or perish in the mine. After nearly three days underground, their only hope is the feverish rescue operation underway 75 meters above their heads, desperate to reach the miners before the water does.
