Once part of the Soviet Union, this Central Asian region is now dominated by oil, Islam, militants... and enough radioactive waste to terrify the West. Unemployment is rampant, censorship and government repression are the norm. The poor survive on a diet of dogs and rats. Many westerners have never heard of the four ‘stans’, but, says Simon Reeves, they soon will.
