Young children enjoy making and creating. They are eager to construct new objects from the resources and materials that they find around them. The process of construction provides many opportunities for development of physical control, such as eye-hand co-ordination and fine motor skills, as well as thinking skills such as logical reasoning and processes such as decision making and problem solving. Building on a larger scale, such as making cubbies and shelters with household and recycled materials, offers opportunities for cooperative play and collaborative learning as children work together to manipulate larger materials and resources as they build together.
