Like the television series, Clannad the Motion Picture is an adaptation of Key's titular 2004 Visual Novel, and tells the story of two young students, Okazaki Tomoya and Furukawa Nagisa, and the romance that gradually develops between them as they help and support each other through several hardships.
It is important to note, however, that the film is related to the series only by virtue of both being based on the same source: Produced by an entirely different studio (Toei Animation), and with no collaboration between the two, they were never meant to accompany one another, instead being separate, and at some points quite different, interpretations of the same story.
