Watch Bizarre Foods online: Episode 4 Appalachia

Andrew heads to the Appalachian Mountains to get a taste of the region's culture and its food. He begins his journey in the small town of Cass, West Virginia where some local hunters take him out in the woods to hunt for squirrels. Afterwards, Andrew is introduced to a variety of squirrel dishes including chicken fried squirrel and squirrel brains. Next, Andrew makes a stop in the tiny town of Helvetia, West Virginia for a deer roast in the traditional Swiss style- cooked underground overnight. Andrew arrives in Shelby, North Carolina just in time for the annual Liver Mush Festival. Liver mush, made from pig parts, including the liver and the head, was invented in Shelby and the residents love it. Andrew tries it fried and served with mustard and grape jelly. Appalachia is home to many native Americans, including the Cherokee on the Qualla Boundary Reservation in Cherokee, NC. Andrew comes to the home of a Cherokee woman where he learns about some traditional foods and then sits down to dinner with her family. They eat bear and trout flavored with sumac. In Asheville, North Carolina Andrew meets up with the mushroom man - Alan Muskat - who takes Andrew out foraging for mushrooms. The pair then go to the Market Place Restaurant to try some of the different kinds of mushrooms they found. Finally, Andrew comes to the Smokey Mountain town of Pittman Center, Tennessee, just outside Gatlinburg. He's invited to an old family cabin where he's treated to an authentic mountain meal with a real live descendent of the McCoy family. They eat barbequed raccoon, baked possum, and listen to some regional music.
