After she witnesses the murder of mob accountant Marty Angelo, Stonetree assigns Nick to watch over ten year-old Lisa Cooper until her father returns from an out-of-town job. Recalling his own bittersweet encounter with the young orphan, Daniel, in World War II London, Nick reluctantly accepts the assignment after learning that Lisa's mother died while saving her from the path of a drunk driver, and that the young girl still blames herself for the accident. However, while taking Lisa to his loft after she has given a description of the killers to the police, Nick is shot and wounded in an attempt on her life. Called to tend to his wounds and noticing that Nick is not healing like he used to, Natalie realizes that their efforts to make him human are beginning to work. Admitting he would like to have a family one day, Nick tells her of his experience with Daniel, and remembers helping the boy escape Lacroix's evil spell. Then, as Lisa tries to wake him up, she accidentally blinds Nick with a mirror as the two hit-men lurk outside his door preparing their attack. Struggling to regain his sight, Nick's hearing picks up the men outside and, after momentarily recalling his shock at finding that Lacroix recaptured Daniel, he prepares to take on their assailants without the use of his eyes. Though unable to see, with Lisa's help he disables the pair of attackers just as Schanke arrives to aid in their arrest. Finally, still feeling responsible for all that has gone wrong, Lisa is persuaded by Nick to not be so hard on herself before returning the young girl to her father.
