While walking with Schanke and Knight to discuss his possible promotion, vice squad detective Jim Anderson is shot and killed by sniper fire. Angered by the shooting of his former partner, Schanke dismisses Stonetree's suggestion that he take some time off and insists he be allowed to investigate the killing. However, when an anonymous threat indicates that he is also a target, Schanke is taken to a seedy hotel for protection, where an attempt on his life kills the young cop assigned to guard him. Worried that someone inside the precinct may be after him, Nick asks Janette to hide Schanke at her nightclub during the investigation. Reluctantly, Janette agrees, reminded of a time when Nick risked his life to save her and Lacroix from a band of vampire hunters. While growing restless during the wait, Schanke explores the club, nearly discovering a group of vampires sleeping in a basement storeroom. Meanwhile, when a routine check turns up little information about him in the department's records, Nick turns to Larry Merlin, another vampire and computer expert, to stem an inquiry into his past. Taking a break at a nearby newsstand, Schanke spots a magazine ad threatening harm to his family unless he appears at the police academy target range. Commandeering a passing car, Schanke heads for the academy followed by Nick, who finds his partner under fire by Macavoy, an embittered police academy classmate who was dismissed before graduating. However, when Macavoy fires again, the wounded Schanke gets off a shot that kills him, ending his murderous quest for revenge. Finally, with Merlin's help, Nick avoids an embarrassing investigation of his past.
