Morse investigates a murder that takes him away from the familiar setting of twentieth century Oxford to solving a canal murder in Oxford in 1859. Morse becomes convinced that the boatmen publicly hanged for the murder were victims of a gross miscarriage of justice and, nearly 140 years after their deaths on the gallows, sets out to establish the true facts of the case.
