Winter in Kavik offers few hunting opportunities for Sue, but a group of ptarmigan provides a target rich environment. Andy leaves Calico for a few days, leaving Kate alone to manage the duties required to run their homestead. Chip and Agnes discover a trip-altering fuel leak on their way to the hunting grounds.
