With brutal clarity, it now becomes clear to Birgitte that her daughter Laura's illness has not improved over the past few months, but has in fact become much worse. Birgitte feels terribly guilty about failing to support her daughter, and so when Laura's psychiatrist mentions the possibility of Laura being admitted to a private psychiatric hospital, Liseholm, and thereby side-stepping the long waiting lists in the public system, Birgitte and Phillip immediately choose to accept the offer.The only problem is that Birgitte's government is simultaneously removing the tax advantages of private health insurance in the health part of the government's major reform package, "Our Common Future", so Birgitte must pay for the hospital admission herself, rather than allow Phillip's health insurance to pay.
