Seven part mini-series based on the novel by Anton Myrer that aired on NBC during 1976-77 as part of its NBC Best Sellers series. The storyline dealt with the life of professional military man Sam Damon from World War I until the onset of the Vietnam War. Sam Elliott, Cliff Potts, and Darleen Carr starred. The careers of two Army officers played by Sam Elliott and Cliff Potts are chronicled from the trenches of World War I to the jungles of New Guinea in World War II Sam Damon (Elliott) is a farm boy whose concerns are always for the welfare of his men, while Courtney Massingale (Cliff Potts) concentrates strictly on the advancement of his military career. A large cast of "cameo" stars appeared in the series, including Anthony Zerbe, Ralph Bellamy, MacDonald Carey, Dana Clark, Andrew Duggan, Kim Hunter, Albert Salmi, John Saxon, Barry Sullivan, Phyllis Thaxter, Forrest Tucker, David Wayne and William Windom.
