The major forms of mental disorder are distressingly prevalent, universal across cultures, and highly impairing. Because they carry moderate to high heritability, a paradox is apparent: Wouldn’t the risk for mental disorders have been eliminated from the gene pool long ago? This lecture probes important aspects of genetic and evolutionary theory to resolve this paradox.
