Attention is the filter through which our minds focus on the most salient events inside and around us; inhibitory control allows us to escape previous conditioning and buy time to choose different responses. When attention and inhibition don’t function optimally, the controversial diagnosis of attention-defi cit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may result. This lecture reviews the clinical disorder, the impairments related to this condition, as well as medication and behavioral treatments. We will also discuss the ways in which attention and inhibitory disorders can inform us about the normative regulation of attention and behavior.
