A major question regarding both individual development and evolutionary development is whether they operate continuously and
smoothly versus discontinuously, or in stages. Although the answer depends largely on the scale of measurement, discontinuous shifts
in both individual development and the development of species are quite apparent. Regarding the development of humans, risk factors are variables within the person or environment that precede and predict negative outcomes. Some are fi xed and some are malleable; the premium is on fi nding truly causal risk factors that can be altered. We therefore explore protective factors, which promote healthy outcome and resilient functioning despite high probabilities of maladaptation.
