Watch Origins of the human mind online: Episode 9 Childhood—Stages and Widening Contexts

Children are infl uenced by parents and other adults, but children’s behavior, in turn, shapes adult responses, revealing reciprocal and transactional processes. Jean Piaget posited 4 stages of the child’s cognitive development: sensorimotor (0–1 years), preoperational (2–6 years), concrete operational (7–11 years), and formal operational (12 and up). Peer groups and neighborhoods also influence development. Culture is an essential concept for the origins of the human mind. Not only may our brains and minds have evolved in conjunction with culture, but individual differences in perceiving and categorizing the world are shaped by cultural contexts.
