This lecture focuses on Darwinian principles, their integration with genes, and modern ideas about how modern human brains and
minds have emerged from those of our primate ancestors. Across evolutionary history, mammals had the fi rst cortices, built around
more basic brain regions linked to refl ex and basic emotion. Donald’s stages of ape minds, early human minds, modern human minds,
and extremely recent human minds are reviewed. The debate between natural selection or “cultural evolution” in shaping modern
human minds is emphasized.
