This lecture features the building blocks of the brain—neurons, neurotransmitters, synapses, and glial cells. We discuss divisions of the brain, including the cortex and its tertiary association areas, which provide for abstract thought. Frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal lobes are discussed. Massive interconnections across multiple brain regions are a uniquely human feature; myelination, which begins late in fetal life and continues for many years, propels fast neural transmission of electrical signals.
