Based on a novel Heavy Sand by Anatoli Rybakov. The film tells a story of love between Rachel and Jacob that was born before the World War. He is German, she is Jewish. He moves from Zurich to Simferopol to be with her. They will be crashed by the millstones of the 20th century.
