National Geographic takes a detailed look at the chaos that consumed Los Angeles in spring 1992. The explosion of anger, violence and arson started in South Central Los Angeles, after four white police officers were acquitted in the beating of a black motorist, Rodney King—a beating captured on videotape. "L.A. Riots" details the lasting television images of the riots, how the violence unfolded, examines why many of the residents of South Central were so angry, and looks at Los Angeles Police Department obstacles and mishaps in the face of the growing destruction.
