An examination of how Fred Rose's 1877 Serio Comic Map of Europe at War allowed maps to take on a new direction and form, reflecting a changing world that meant they could be used as devices for humour, satire or storytelling. The graphic artist used a combination of creatures and human figures to represent each European nation, while in 1880, he was able to capture the public mood with designs that commented on election issues featuring Gladstone and Disraeli.
