Along the way there's the story of Dave's first flight (aged 8) off the top of his dad's wall (two broken thumbs), a surprisingly vibrant Thai community in Askham, air-dried hams and Roman bread, and a tussle with Si's mum over her precious recipe book. At least they find time to try some local fun at the ice rink – Dave in lurex doing his Abba tribute is a sight to behold ...
