Watch Battle Stations online: Episode 1 Mosquito Attack

During World War II there was one aircraft that was equally at home at 30,000 feet on a reconnaissance mission as it was skimming at tree top level taking the fight to the enemy's door. With a speed of over 400 mph, it was so fast and manoeuvrable that the Germans awarded their pilots with two kills if they managed to shoot one down. Mosquito Attack tells the story of how this incredible aircraft was ridiculed from the start. Powered by two Rolls Royce Merlin engines it was a revolutionary leap of design. It had no armour, had no weapons, could carry the same bomb load as a B17 bomber and was built entirely of wood. Yet, by the end of the war over 40 different versions of this amazing aircraft were used in every theatre of battle. Mosquito Attack saw plenty of action; from bombing Berlin to flying at 10 feet against the dreaded Gestapo prisons; from a night fighter against the Luftwaffe to a pathfinder on D-Day, alongside U-boats and V1 terror rockets. It even had time to undertake secret missions with the OSS. Using unique archive film, detailed re-enactments and extraordinary interviews, Mosquito Attack flies into the heat of battle with these wooden wonders.
