In 1998, ABC commissioned two 30 minute TV pilots from John Safran. Media Tycoon focused on the media industry. It became infamous for a segment where Safran turned up to Ray Martin's home and harassed him in tabloid style. Master Chef focused on the food industry. Notably it featured a cooking segment where Safran prepared a beef dish.
