Fingersmith (pickpocket) Sue Trinder (Sally Hawkins), takes a position as maid to rich heiress Maud Lilly (Elaine Cassidy), in a plot to persuade her to marry swindler Richard Rivers (Rupert Evans), who will then gain acces to her money. However, the plan goes seriously awry when Sue falls in love with Maud.
