On 12 May 1989, a freight train derailed, killing five people. The train derailed from descending at high speeds from a pass in the mountains without air brakes and had been overloaded. More than a week later, an underground gasoline pipeline, which was damaged by earth moving equipment during the crash cleanup, ruptured killing two more people.
