Chicago, June 17, 1929. Prohibition is the law, but speakeasies flourish. Al Capone is doing a short term in jail for the minor charge of carrying a gun; his lieutenants are running the Syndicate. Tonight, Eliot Ness and 8 federal agents do a raid on the Montmartre Cafe: a speak downstairs, and upstairs Capone's headquarters. Tony Liguri taunts Ness that his drink is plain seltzer. Frank ""The Enforcer"" Nitti walks over to Ness and asks, ""You got a search warrant?"" (Nitti doesn't know who Ness is.) There's no booze to be found anywhere, so Ness and his men leave. Then Nitti asks Tony Liguri how much the payoff for the tip cost them. Tony Liguri says a grand; Nitti slaps him across the face with the search warrant, snarling, ""You stupid, you could have bought 'em for 500.""
