At the judo dojo, Hanamichi meets with Aota and is enticed into joining the judo club after being offered a photograph of Haruko. Though Aota is hesitant to give away Haruko's photo since he also has affections for Haruko; Aota does it to realize his dream to recruit Hanamichi and conquering the national judo scene. However, Hanamichi replies, "as much as I want that picture of Haruko, I have no intention of joining your club." He then easily defeats Aota, who begins to rant about his multiple tales Akagi and Aota's fiery rivalry past.
