Tess, Dan and Daisy return to their hometown so Tess can be the Queen, like her mother and grandmother, in the Queen's Pageant that is held every twenty-five years. Tess, worn out from their hectic lifestyle, is happy to be home but the valuable amulet she wears as Queen is snatched from her during the parade. After a wild chase and some detecting, the thief turns out to be the son of a woman who lost the contest to be Queen years ago. He was trying to please his mother. Tess decides she likes her life on the road best of all.
