Gabriella is articulate and wise beyond her years, and at school she is an outgoing leader. She was even voted "Homecoming Queen" - but even though others think of her as constantly cheerful, on the inside, she is consumed with insecurity and unhappiness with her weight. She first realized she was overweight when some boys started teasing her in the first grade, and it's only gotten worse. She thinks about food constantly, feels she has no self-control over her eating, and despite pressure from her mom to lose pounds, she's been unable to stick to any diet. Gabriella's weight has become a real power struggle between her and her mom, and she knows she needs someone to help her break the cycle. She says she has never felt normal or skinny and wonders sometimes if she'll ever know what it means to feel that way.
After a summer of dieting and training with Katie, Gabriella lost 90 lbs and discovered a newfound confidence in dealing with her mom. She even returned to her high school to crown the next year's homecoming queen, showing off her new look.
