This course has attempted to integrate individual development and evolutionary development—a daunting task, given our still imperfect knowledge of both domains. Among the many frontier areas in the study of the mind, we discuss renewed interest in unconscious mental processes; the exponential growth of computers and artificial intelligence; advances in the study of consciousness; mind engineering; and applications of scientific findings to key social problems. The study of the mind has the potential to foster the development of positive as well as negative human attributes; whether our species’ heightened awareness of brains and minds can fuel a healthier and more humane world remains to be seen. Overall, sciences of the mind and humanities require further integration.
