Scientific knowledge about the mind and brain is rapidly accumulating, but much remains to be learned from narrative accounts of human experience. Human mythic skills reveal the essential nature of narrative. A vivid example is found in the fascinating yet harrowing story of the life of my father, a philosopher who began to experience severe symptoms of psychosis in adolescence, misdiagnosed as schizophrenia. A blend of risk factors and protective factors characterized his life. Only when I became a young adult did my father divulge the truth, going against medical advice, which led to a new diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
