Watch Origins of the human mind online: Episode 8 Infancy—Temperament and Attachment

This lecture looks at individual development, beginning with infancy. Temperament signifi es patterns of early-appearing, biologicallybased behavioral and emotional tendencies, such as activity level, the ability to be soothed, and intensity of emotional responses. Across these dimensions, babies can be branded as “easy,” “diffi cult,” or “inhibited”; these categories predict important outcomes decades later. Next, because primates, especially humans, are helpless for long periods after birth, evolution has favored strong motivation to stay in close proximity to caregivers. Attachment signifi es the ways in which infants form secure, insecure, or disorganized bonds with parents, related to the sensitivity of parental responses during infancy. Temperament and attachment are key building blocks for the development of personalities and minds.
