In this one off special, Jeremy Clarkson explores the planning and execution of one of the most daring naval operations ever undertaken - the attack on the dry dock at St Nazaire. Born out of necessity, the intention of the raid was to neuter the largest battle ship of the war – Germany’s infamous Tirpitz, and was arguably the turning point which kept Britain alive during the war. Although one of the least documented actions of the Second World War, the conflict saw more VCs issued more quickly than in any other single action throughout the war.
Featuring interviews with survivors of the raid and incredible unseen archive footage; the documentary covers from the formation of the Commando unit, through to the planning and execution of the raid itself.
